How are we helping to solve this problem?
Across our funds, our Health & Wellbeing investments have been addressing challenges like these by building high-quality care homes for the elderly; by helping people with long-term conditions manage their health more effectively; by pioneering ‘hospital at home’ services to reduce the pressures on A&E departments; by using community pharmacies to improve health outcomes in underserved areas; and more.
In 2009, Bridges invested in Babington Grou, a high-quality education provider, that delivers skills training across a variety of sectors. It is also a pioneer of the UK apprenticeship programme.
Under Bridges’ ownership, Babington’s revenues increased eight-fold from under £2m to more than £15m, thanks to strong organic growth, the integration of two successful bolt-on acquisitions and the launch of an innovative online learning platform. The exit price in April 2016 represented an internal rate of return of 33%.
Since investment, Babington supported over 32,000 learners and helped over 3,700 formerly unemployed people back into work. In 2015 alone, it trained 1,600 16-18 year-olds at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) with about two-thirds of these students coming from underserved areas. Throughout its strong growth, student satisfaction levels remained consistently high, with 93% citing overall satisfaction (against a national benchmark of 85%), and employer satisfaction at 92% (against a national benchmark of 74%).
London Early Years Foundation
LEYF is a charitable social enterprise that provides early years education through nurseries in London. Its mission is to build a better future for London’s children, families and local communities through a commitment to excellence in early years education, training and research.
LEYF operates in some of the most disadvantaged areas in London, where there is typically an under-supply of high quality nurseries. It operates an innovative ‘balanced portfolio’ business model which enables it to provide a consistently high quality of nursery education in all the areas in which it operates. As a charity, all surpluses are re-invested to support its mission.
